Gutters

Gutters and Drainage: what it covers

Quick answer

Gutters collect the water a roof sheds and carry it through downspouts away from the fascia and foundation. Repair clears and re-hangs sagging runs, reseals seams and replaces damaged sections; installation fits new gutters to the roofline. Winston-Salem Roofing connects you with an independent local contractor in Forsyth County.

Gutters and Drainage illustration for Winston-Salem, NC

A roof sheds a lot of water, and a gutter is what decides where it lands. In Winston-Salem, monthly rain averages about 2.6 to 3.4 inches, with January near 2.7 and March and May near 3.3. When a gutter is clogged, sagging or pitched wrong, that water pours over the edge instead, and it lands against the fascia, the siding and the ground beside the foundation.

Trees are the usual cause. The Piedmont is leafy, and limbs overhanging the roof drop leaves, seed pods and twigs into the gutter all year. After storms the debris is heavier: Helene's remnants in September 2024 brought down trees and an awning in Winston-Salem, and winter ice storms have loaded limbs until they came down.

Gutter work sits at the edge of roofing, and not every roofer does it. Call (833) 751-2102 and say whether you want a repair, a replacement run or a new installation, and you will be put through to a local contractor who can look at the roofline.

Warning signs

Signs you need gutters and drainage

Ladders and wet gutters are a common cause of falls, and a gutter that looks solid can pull out of rotted fascia when you lean on it. Do not lean a ladder against a gutter, and stay away from any gutter near a power line.

  • Water spilling over the front edge of the gutter during rain instead of reaching the downspout
  • A gutter that sags, pulls away from the fascia or has loose hangers
  • Seams that drip at the joints between sections
  • Plants, weeds or seedlings growing from the gutter, a sign of long-standing debris
  • Rotting or peeling fascia and soffit behind the gutter
  • Staining or erosion on the ground at the foot of a wall, or a damp basement or crawl space wall
  • Downspouts that dump water at the base of the house or against a foundation corner
  • Streaks on siding below the gutter line
Our process

How our gutters and drainage visit works

  1. Look at the water path

A contractor watches or traces where water goes: roof edge, gutter, downspout, ground. The point where it leaves the intended path shows what needs fixing.

  2. Check the fascia and the pitch

Gutters hang from the fascia board, and a soft or rotted fascia cannot hold hangers. Gutters also need a slight slope toward the downspout, so the contractor checks the run for sags and low spots.

  3. Clear, re-hang and reseal

Debris is removed, loose hangers are replaced or added, seams are resealed and any pulled-out sections are secured. A gutter that has been overloaded with leaves and ice often needs more hangers, not just cleaning.

  4. Fix the downspout side

Downspouts are checked for clogs and for where they discharge. Extensions or splash blocks move the water away from the foundation rather than letting it pool at the corner.

  5. Replace sections or the full run

If the gutter is bent, split or corroded, new sections or a new run go on. A new installation is measured to the roofline, including corners and the downspout locations.

Cost

How much does gutters and drainage cost in Winston-Salem?

No sourced price for gutters in Winston-Salem is available to this site, so no dollar figure is shown. These are the factors that move a quote.

Gutters and Drainage pricing in Forsyth County (2026)
JobTypical rangeWhat it includes
Cleaning and re-hanging an existing runSmallest job; quoted on siteMostly labor, priced by length and height
Replacing a section or cornerPriced per section; quoted on siteDepends on the material and the profile to be matched
A full new run, seamless or sectionalPriced by length and material; quoted on siteAluminum, steel, copper and other materials are priced very differently

The contractor sets the price after seeing the roofline and confirms it on site before any work starts.

Why do my gutters overflow when they look clean?

A clean gutter can still overflow if it is pitched wrong, if a downspout is clogged below the mouth, or if the roof sends more water than one downspout can carry. Heavy rain over a large roof section is often too much for a short run.

A gutter needs a slight slope toward its downspout. If a section has sagged, water stops there and spills over. If the downspout is plugged lower down, the gutter fills from the bottom even though it looks clear at the top.

On a house with a long, steep roof section, water arrives faster than a single small downspout can handle. A contractor may add a downspout or change the outlet size, which is a drainage decision rather than a cleaning one.

What do leaf-heavy yards and ice storms do to gutters?

Leaves and seed pods clog them and make them heavy, and ice loads them further. Forsyth County has had freezing rain and snow, and an overloaded gutter can bend, sag or tear from the fascia.

Winston-Salem's snowy period runs from about November 29 to March 16, with February the snowiest month. The February 2021 freezing rain toppled trees and caused more than 75,000 outages at its peak in the Triad area, and a February 2026 winter storm put ice on roads and brought trees down. Limbs that land on a gutter bend it, and ice sitting in a full gutter pulls on the hangers.

A gutter that holds standing water over winter also freezes and thaws repeatedly, which strains the seams. See winter ice and snow roof damage for what winter does to the roof itself.

Does an old house need special gutter work?

It can. Some older houses have gutter profiles, materials or built-in details that are part of the roofline's look, and a historic district may review changes to visible exterior features. Ask before replacing, and match the profile where it matters.

The West End Historic District, Old Salem and other districts are reviewed by the Forsyth County Historic Resources Commission when roofs are replaced. Whether gutter changes need approval is a question to put to the commission's staff, not an assumption to make.

On houses with deep eaves, tall walls or unusual rooflines, getting a gutter run to hang straight and drain well takes some thought. See historic district roofing for how reviews work.

What should I ask when getting a gutter quote?

Ask about the material, whether the run is seamless or sectional, how many downspouts there will be, where they discharge, and whether the fascia behind will be checked. Ask also what is included in disposal and cleanup, and get the quote in writing.

The material changes both the price and the look: aluminum, steel and copper behave differently, and a profile that suits a bungalow may look wrong on a Tudor revival. Ask to see a sample or a photo of the finished profile on a house like yours.

Ask what happens to the old gutters and the debris, and whether any trim or fascia repair is included or priced separately. A contractor who looks at the fascia before quoting is thinking about the whole job.

Options

Types and options for gutters and drainage

Repair and cleaning

Appropriate when the gutters are mostly sound but clogged, loose or leaking at seams. It costs the least and often solves the water-over-the-edge problem, particularly where overhanging trees are the cause.

Replacement of damaged sections or runs

Chosen when gutters are bent by fallen limbs, split by ice or corroded through. The contractor measures the old run and fits new material, sometimes in a different profile or material.

New installation and gutter guards

Houses with no gutters at all, or additions, get a fresh install. Guards cover the top of the gutter to keep leaves out, but they are not maintenance-free: fine debris and seed pods can still build up on top of them.

Forsyth County

Why gutters and drainage is different in Piedmont Triad

Tree cover is the main local variable. A house in an older, well-planted neighborhood, with limbs over the roof, needs gutter attention far more often than one in an open new development. Falling limbs also bend gutters during wind, and the storm warnings for Forsyth County have cited 60 to 70 mph gusts and damage to trees.

Rain falls year-round at about 2.6 to 3.4 inches per month, and July has the most wet days at about 13.6. Gutters get used heavily, not just in storm season, so a small flaw gets tested all year.

The median Winston-Salem home was built in 1977, so many gutters are on houses that have had them replaced once already, and the fascia behind them may be older than the gutters. Check it when the gutters come down.

One call and it gets handled.

Most gutters and drainage calls are scheduled the same day when a technician is free, and you approve the price before any work starts.

FAQ

Gutters and Drainage FAQs

How often should gutters be cleaned?

It depends on the trees over the roof. A house under heavy leaf cover may need cleaning more than once a year, and a house in the open may need little. Check after storms and after the autumn leaf drop, and look at what comes out of the downspout.

Are gutter guards worth it?

They reduce how often you clean, but they do not eliminate it. Fine debris and seed pods can build up on top of them, and some designs make the gutter harder to inspect. Ask the contractor what the guards do and do not do with the trees on your lot.

Why is water pooling next to my foundation?

Often because a downspout discharges too close to the wall, or a clogged gutter is overflowing at that corner. Extensions or splash blocks move water away. If pooling continues after the gutters are working, the grade of the ground may need attention.

Does a roofer handle gutters?

Some do and some do not, because gutters are a related trade. Tell the call line you want gutter work and the contractor you reach can say whether they do it or point you to someone who does.

Can damaged gutters cause roof leaks?

Indirectly. A clogged gutter can back water up under the lowest shingles, and rotted fascia can let water behind the roof edge. The roof leak repair page covers how a leak is traced when you cannot tell where it starts.

Do gutters need a permit in Winston-Salem?

Gutter repair and replacement typically do not, but local rules can differ by address and by whether a house sits in a historic district. Call the Forsyth County Inspections Division at (336) 727-2624 if unsure, and ask the commission about historic properties.
